5 Delicious Ways to Prepare Tofu (It Doesn’t Have to Taste Bland)

Do you think of tofu as bland, dull, and flavourless? That weird food that only hippies and vegans eat? You're wrong!

When prepared correctly, tofu acts as a sponge, taking on the flavours of whatever you choose to season it with. This makes it extremely versatile, and suitable for loads of awesome recipes.

Keep reading for five tips on preparing tofu so that it tastes amazing.

1. Lemon and Herb Fillets

Want something mild but tasty to accompany roast vegetables, salad, rice or couscous? This lemon and herb tofu fillet is perfect.

Simply slice tofu into four thin fillets, marinate in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, mixed herbs, and garlic, then grill. You'll get a subtle but punchy flavour, ideal for tasty summer dishes.

2. Fiery Chilli Steaks

Want something with a bit of a kick? Trying to cater for a huge steak fan? You've got this.

Simply slice your tofu into two large steaks, cover with crushed chillis, garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cumin, and fry on each side. Flip the tofu at least four times, and add more seasoning with each flip. You won't believe how tasty this is.

3. Eggy Tofu Scramble

That's right - scrambled egg, but made from tofu. Simply grab a block of tofu, and crumble into a bowl.  Next, heat oil, throw the tofu in, and add turmeric, nutritional yeast, black salt, pepper, plus any of the herbs you'd typically add to scrambled egg.

The turmeric gives it an authentic yellow colour, while the other ingredients work together to create a realistic 'eggy' taste. Fry for 5 - 10 minutes, then serve on toast with plenty of black pepper. Yum.

4. Mexican Taco Filling

Tofu makes an awesome filling for tacos, and it's packed with protein. Simply cube or crumble a block of firm tofu, then throw into a pan along with mushrooms, peppers, onions, crushed chillis, garlic powder, paprika, cumin, cinnamon and salt.

Load up your tacos, top with plenty of salsa and guacamole, and you're ready to go.

5. Tofu Chocolate Mousse

Sounds crazy? Grab a block of silken tofu, add cocoa powder and sugar according to your tastes, and blend until smooth. You'll be amazed at how good this tastes, and how easy it is to make.

Tofu doesn't have to be weird, bland or gross. Use the ideas above to start experimenting with this awesome ingredient in your kitchen.
